Mononoke is an unconventional synthesizer that is specifically designed for composing evolving soundscapes and musical textures. What sets Mononoke apart from other synths is its unique feedback routing feature. With the ability to route voices back into each other in multiple ways, Mononoke creates a variety of overtones and pulsating resonant frequencies. This interaction between voices helps fuse all layers together into a coherent musical landscape.
The synthesizer engines of Mononoke are relatively simple in terms of controls, but they influence a complex system of interconnected LFOs. Think of Mononoke as one massive FM synthesizer, where each voice functions as an independently playable operator. Together, all operators contribute to the creation of a single soundscape.
Complex soundscapes can be created live using the 8 performance pads on Mononoke. These pads allow you to modulate each voice independently in several dimensions. Your interactions with the pads can also be recorded and tweaked, as they are sent out as MIDI/MPE (when loaded as an AU plugin in a compatible host). Additionally, the pads can be individually latched, enabling some voices to be used as drones while others can be added or removed as extra sonic layers. The pads are fully integrated into the Audio Unit plugin.
In terms of connectivity, Mononoke is designed as an AUv3 plugin with advanced Audio Unit features such as MPE input and output. It offers a fully exposed array of AU parameters for automation and provides the connectivity and scalability expected from modern plugins. However, the standalone mode is basic and does not offer any connectivity with other apps and effects. To use Mononoke in conjunction with other apps and effects, it needs to be loaded into a host like Garageband, Audiobus, AUM, or Cubasis.
- Audio Unit (AUv3) plugin
- 8 voice polyphony, with 2 independent engines featuring 4 voices each
- Compatible with MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) and MIDI
- MIDI Input and Output available only when used as an Audio Unit plugin
- Basic standalone mode for jamming purposes, without connectivity
- 8 independently tunable performance pads for expressive interaction
- Universal and fully scalable to any screen size, with support for fullscreen mode in AU hosts
- Voice tuning can be freely adjusted or quantized to semitones (with overall fine-tuning)
- Requires iOS10 (MIDI/MPE output from the plugin requires iOS11) or higher
Mononoke also includes Mononoke Pads, an additional AUv3 MIDI controller plugin that allows you to play MPE compatible synths using Mononoke's pads. Please note that Mononoke Pads is a separate plugin that will be installed in your MIDI Plugin collection, and it requires iOS 11.
